Overview of Antarctica Weather
Antarctica is the world’s coldest, windiest, and driest continent. It is also the highest continent, with an average elevation of about 2,000 meters (6,600 feet). Located in the southern hemisphere, Antarctica is almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle.
The weather in Antarctica is very cold and windy. The average annual temperature is -57°C (-70°F), but it can get as low as -89°C (-129°F). The wind speed can reach up to 320 kilometers per hour (200 miles per hour).
There is very little precipitation in Antarctica. Most of the continent receives less than 50 centimeters (20 inches) of snowfall each year.
Despite the extreme conditions, there is a wide range of plant and animal life in Antarctica. Penguins, seals, and whales are just some of the animals that call this continent home.
