Overview of Tokelau Weather

The climate of Tokelau is tropical, with a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October. The average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius, and humidity is high. There is little variation in temperature or rainfall from one island to another.

The prevailing winds are from the east, southeast, or southwest. From May to October, the southeast trade winds blow from the Solomon Islands. These winds bring warm, moist air, and Tokelau experiences its heaviest rainfall during this time. From November to April, the winds are from the southwest, and Tokelau experiences its driest weather.

Tokelau lies just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, and as a result, the sun is overhead for six months of the year (from November to April). The ultraviolet index is high year-round, and sun protection is advised.

Cyclone season runs from November to April, and Tokelau is vulnerable to storms. In February 2005, Cyclone Percy caused damage to all three atolls.
