Overview of Uganda Weather
Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa. It is bordered by Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north. Uganda lies almost completely within the Nile basin and has a varied topography. The climate of Uganda is tropical, with two wet seasons and two dry seasons.
The average temperature in Uganda is 20.8 degrees Celsius (69.4 degrees Fahrenheit). The country experiences two rainy seasons, the first from March to May and the second from September to November. These are often referred to as the long and short rains, respectively. The wet seasons are followed by two dry seasons, the first from December to February and the second from June to August.
Uganda generally has a pleasant climate, although there can be some variation depending on altitude. The temperatures in the capital, Kampala, are usually a few degrees cooler than in the rest of the country. Kampala is located at an altitude of 1,100 metres (3,609 feet) above sea level.
The climate of Uganda can be divided into three main zones:
The hot and humid lowlands, which make up the majority of the country
The cooler and drier highlands
The semi-arid northeast
The hot and humid lowlands are located in the central and southern parts of the country, at altitudes of up to 1,000 metres (3,281 feet). This region has an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit). The rainy season here lasts from March to May, with an average of 200 millimetres (7.9 inches) of rainfall per month.
The cooler and drier highlands are located in the west, southwest, and northwest of the country, at altitudes of 1,000 to 2,000 metres (3,281 to 6,562 feet). This region has an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). The rainy season here lasts from September to November, with an average of 150 millimetres (5.9 inches) of rainfall per month.
The semi-arid northeast is located in the northeast of the country, at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,500 metres (3,281 to 4,921 feet). This region has an average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit). The rainy season here lasts from April to September, with an average of 100 millimetres (3.9 inches) of rainfall per month.
